After trying diet after diet I have personally found that the ketogenic diet is the best for me. There are so many benefits that it is my favorite. Quick results is the number one reason I like it so much. After the first initial week I feel better, my aches from arthritic inflammation are decreased dramatically. I am a carb addict, ok, there I said it! If I eat anything loaded with carbs it seems like I just want more. The bad thing is I know they make me feel terrible in the end. I become lethargic and feel like I am going to just go to sleep if I stop moving. After about 20 minutes of eating a high carb meal I feel almost nauseous and have a headache, yet I eat them any way.

I have learned through trial and error that carbs are my enemy. They literally are killing me. To find a way to escape my addiction I found the ketogenic diet. It was introduced to me in a book I had rented from my local library on Hypothyroidism. Go figure. Another ailment that can be benefited with this way of eating. I am not saying it cures hypothyroidism but it can help with some of the symptoms. I have also found that my arthritis pain is not as bad when I am eating ketogenic. I guess the old saying “we are what we eat” may hold some truth.

Ketogenic is a term used for when our bodies go into a state of ketosis. I love being in ketosis, even on a mild level. It means my body is burning fat for fuel. In order for that to take place we have to starve our bodies of carbohydrates. Our bodies will burn all carbohydrates first  for energy before it seeks other sources.  It takes about 24-48 hours for our bodies to deplete our carbohydrate stores.They are easily converted to sugar for a quick burst of energy. If we are no longer giving our bodies carbohydrates it will seek fat for fuel. Woo hoo!!

So what can we eat?

You can eat most any meat, fresh vegetables, butter and fats are also recommended.

  • Fish
  • Tuna
  • Pork which  includes bacon and sausage, yum!
  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Green Beans
  • Celery
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Coconut Oil
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Cream Cheese
  • Almond Flour
  • Coconut Flour

This is not a complete list by any means, but it is the main things I have in my fridge and pantry at all times. After a lot of research I found there are so many recipes for the ketogenic diet that replace our comfort food it makes sense to eat this way and enjoy the many health benefits that come with it. I mean who wants to give up there mashed potatoes, right? Well you can use cauliflower instead and can barely tell the difference. Who knew?

Eating this way feels so good that after you have been in ketosis for a while you don’t even miss the junk food.
